Proof of service

A proof of service is the document that shows a court that legal papers were properly delivered to the right person.

What it proves

The proof of service confirms who was served, when, where, and how. Without it, a court may not believe the defendant received notice, which can delay or derail a case.

What it includes

A typical proof of service states the server's name, the date and time of service, the address where service occurred, the documents served, a description of the recipient, and the method used. It is signed under penalty of perjury.
